The film centers around the character of Veijo Haukka, played by Finnish actor Jasper Pääkkönen. Veijo is a man of few words but great skill, having earned a reputation as one of Finland's most daring soldiers during the Winter War. Now, he spends his days prospecting for gold in the remote wilderness.
However, Veijo's peaceful existence is shattered when a group of German soldiers led by the ruthless SS officer Klaus Kärrner (played by German actor Thomas Kretschmann) comes looking for the gold that they believe he has stolen from them. Veijo must use all of his training and cunning to outsmart the Germans and protect himself and his precious treasure.
What follows is a gripping tale of survival and courage in the face of impossible odds. As Veijo and Klaus engage in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse across the frozen tundra, the tensions between them escalate to a boiling point. Along the way, we meet a cast of colorful characters, including a young Lapp girl who becomes Veijo's ally, and a band of Finnish resistance fighters who join the fight against the Nazi invaders.
Despite its fictional plot, "Sisu" paints a vivid portrait of life in wartime Finland, where the harsh climate and rugged terrain add an extra layer of difficulty to an already grueling conflict. Director Jalmari Helander, known for his darkly comedic style in films like "Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale," brings that same sensibility to "Sisu," infusing the film with a sense of sly humor even as it delivers heart-pounding action.
